Creative Use of Stickers in Advertising

Donald18th Jun 2010Advertising,

My favourite type of advertising is out-of-home/outdoor advertising. Strike that, my favourite type of advertising is creative advertising. I just happen to find outdoor advertising tends to have a more creative flair. I stumbled upon a site full of great outdoor gurrilla marketing examples. Funnily enough the website is http://www.creativeguerrillamarketing.com. Below are just a few of the examples of the creative use of stickers in advertising I found on that site. The full list can be found here.

1. Batman

Batman

These stickers were placed on footpath lights so that the bat signal was created when the lights were on. While I do think this is a creative use of the lights it’s hard to tell from this picture how well this actually worked. Unless there was an overhang, I doubt that the lights would be strong enough to project the bat symbol. However, it’s the freakin’ bat signal so it gets an automatic pass in my book.

2. Frontline Flea & Tick Spray

Frontline Flea & Tick Spray

These giant floor stickers were placed in malls to promote Frontline’s flea mediation. There are two things that I like about this advertisement. The first is that it involves cute animals. Cute animals always get people’s attention. The second is that you become part of the advertisement.

3. Unicef Landmine

Unicef Landmine

These stickers were created to bring awareness to landmines and were designed to blend in with the flooring. Once stepped on, the self-adhesive tops would stick to your shoe. When the sticker is removed the person would find a picture of a landmine and be informed that there are countries where they would now be dismembered. I like this advertisement because it is so simple, yet so powerful.

Perspective is everything

Donald11th Mar 2010Advertising

I just came across the following Samsung digital camera ad and I had to share.

I think that it does a great job of being memorable with all the crazy characters and has a hook to keep you watching in order to find out how the pictures will turn out. I also think it relates very well to their younger demographic that they were targeting. Everyone wants to look good but younger people tend to be a bit more insecure about themselves and this video taps into that insecurity by showcasing a guide to taking better pictures of “yourself.” This is helps create a direct (and hopefully emotional) connection between the viewer and the product. Also, showcasing the photos in various online social media sites continues to build a connection between the benefits of this product and the viewers everyday life.

All in all I think that this is a well done commercial and I really enjoyed it. Now, if they only made a camera that subtracted 10 pounds I’d be all set.

Bad Airline Ad or Bad Airline Ad Installation?

Donald6th Feb 2010Advertising, Fail, ,

Turkish Airline Ad

I’m not going to blame the ad agency on this one like the rest of the internet is doing as it is perfectly clear that this ad was meant for the other side of the escalator as no rational person would approve an ad like this.

My question is don’t people have any common sense anymore? Didn’t the guy who put this on the side of the escalator think it odd to install an airline ad in which it essentially shows an airplane crashing into the ground? I know the guy probably just gets paid to install the ads where he is told and not concern himself with the choice of placement but surely this is a time to call the office and double check.
